D-Well is a co-living community for Changemakers. D-Well remodeled the existing multi-family house for young Changemakers to share comfortable and pleasant living space. It is located in Seongsu-dong where is called as social venture valley.
Root Impact thought the reasons why Changemakers cannot continue their missions and activities would be both the absence of social recognition and support and the lack of the like-minded colleagues. We also thought that severe rent burden would be also one of the reasons. So, D-well provides affordable rent to keep the young Changemakers grounded in the mission. The residents create strong tie with the community and learn from each other through the peer-learning process.
The residents are carefully chosen through own process in considering how to make positive and synergistic relationships between the residents. D-Well residents include social entrepreneurs, leaders from NGO and nonprofits, artist, designer, engineer, researcher, educator addressing social issues, founder in fair traded agriculture, human rights activist for North Korean people, and share economy expert and they all contribute to innovate the society where we are living today.
Back in November 2014, Root Impact opened a community platform space, 'D-Well Salon' for Changemakers. As the salon itself indicates, the place has been running as a place where anyone, as long as they dream for a better world, can visit and share their thoughts and daily routines.
In September 2016, the first and the basement floor of D-Well Salon were renewed to café and library to promote and share changemaking culture with any interested folks. It was then named 'Oneul Salon' meaning today in Korean to deliver our wishes of making a better tomorrow through sharing today's stories. From D-Well Salon to Oneul Salon, Changemakers’ programs have operated throughout 7 seasons such as 1% Salon, Solution 101, Monthly Q, Salon Movie Talk and Today's Change Campaign. These programs developed the themes of stories and social innovation along with salon members and friends who joined us to make changes in their everyday lives, inspired by those programs.
And, in September 2018, Oneul Salon formed a partnership with the artist group 'Theatre Sinchon' to expand changemaking culture in the realm of art and culture. As the changemaking purpose of Salon and the contents of Theatre Sinchon are combined, it is reborn to ‘Sinchon Salon'. Sinchon Salon agrees with the salon's own idea that people swing by and gather without particular purposes. Indeed, they want to create a unique place where people can gather, hang out and find better todays with art and culture.
We are introducing our shared daycare center to help career paths stretch on uninterrupted.
‘Forest for All’, the daycare center cofounded by Seongsu Social Venture Valley and Hana Financial Group, will fling open its doors in May, 2020. Ten social ventures including Root Impact have together organized a consortium with Hana Financial Group to found and run ‘Forest for All’. The raison d’etre of this center is to provide an anxiety-free working environment for working parents by taking good care of their children during work hours.
Root Impact is keenly aware of that fact that the main reason primary caregivers, working women in particular, give up on their career is due to their child-rearing needs, and have decided that the first step forward is having a daycare center in place.
‘Forest for All’ is the first ever attempt for social ventures to join hands to meet childrearing needs, and will serve as a cornerstone by attracting more talent into the social venture pool.
Constructed by remodeling a three-story building with an area of 480㎡, ‘Forest for All’ can look after 49 children birth to 5 years old. ‘Forest for All’ is co-run with the Hansol Education Co., Ltd.
